“Our product development is foresighted”
Markus Jansén, M.Sc. (Tech.), started in his new job as the manager of product development at Medbase in April. Jansén is driven by the meaningfulness of his work – the fact that the products provided by Medbase contribute to the efficient and safe drug treatment for patients.
Markus Jansén has been interested in health technology for a long time. Already during his studies for a Master’s degree in Information Technology, Jansén worked in companies in the field. Over the years, he has gained solid experience in, for example, the development of patient information systems and medical devices, quality registers and software development processes.
Prior to his appointment as Chief Product Officer (CPO) at Medbase, Jansén worked as the software development manager at a company in the field, leading a team of over 100 professionals.
“During my career, I’ve gained experience in engineering as well as quality and product management. I look forward to being able to create and develop practices that will contribute to the future success of Medbase.”
In his role as CPO, Jansén is responsible for software products and their development. A vital aspect in the development of products such as Medbase API and Medbase Portal, both of which are based on Medbase Knowledgebase, is foresightedness. The direction must be clear throughout the phased process and the strict quality requirements must be met at all stages.
“In agile development, it is essential to listen to the end-user, that is, the healthcare professionals using our products. Nobody welcomes a clinical application designed and made by engineers alone.”

Clinical requirements as the starting point
The databases provided by Medbase offer evidence-based and referenced information that is produced by experts in clinical pharmacology. For Jansén, user experience is a particularly important aspect. Reliable information must be presented in a clear, user-friendly and easily comprehensible form.
“In the development work, we always start from the requirements of the healthcare professionals using our products, such as physicians and pharmacists. They also play a key role in usability testing”, Jansén explains.
The newly appointed CPO mentions localisation as another strength of the Medbase products. Supported by local drug registers, EHR vendors and localisation teams, the databases are currently available in 11 languages in 20 countries across Europe.
“It is great to be able to extend Finnish expertise to other parts of Europe. We provide healthcare professionals with support for drug treatment decisions, which will have a positive impact on patient safety and people’s lives”, Jansén sums up.
Jansén has enjoyed his first months at Medbase. Family life with three children and leisure activities such as biking are important sources of energy for Jansén. “Now, I also cycle to work as the commuting distance dropped from 59 to 9 kilometres”, Jansén laughs.
