Päivi – Ensuring quality behind the scenes

We Are Medbase

When people think about healthcare innovation, they often picture new technologies, products and features. Few think about the systems, processes and safeguards that make those innovations reliable, safe and trustworthy. That is where Päivi Turta comes in.

As Medbase’s Director of Quality and Regulatory Compliance, she works behind the scenes to ensure that quality, customer focus and compliance are embedded in the company’s everyday work across all Medbase products and processes.

Building trust through quality

Over the years, Päivi has found herself drawn to work that combines analytical thinking with continuous learning and improvement. What she enjoys most is understanding how different pieces fit together and helping create structures and find solutions that support both innovation and reliability. What makes the work particularly meaningful is knowing that, ultimately, it contributes to patient safety.

For Päivi, quality is not about QMS procedures or documentation for its own sake.

– Our customers rely on our products to support healthcare professionals. My job is to help ensure that reliability, safety and compliance is built into everything we do.

Päivi’s work brings together quality management, regulatory compliance, risk management and product and process development. Rather than reviewing work afterwards, she feels it is important to work alongside colleagues, understanding both the products and the needs of customers.

– I’ve never wanted quality to be something that happens at the end of a project or work. I want to understand our products, know our customers and work closely with people across the company so that quality becomes part of everyday decisions.

This philosophy is reflected in Medbase’s ISO 13485 certified quality management system. While the certification supports Medbase CDS as a medical device, the quality management system has been designed to cover the entire organisation and all Medbase products. Consistent processes, customer focus and continuous improvement benefit every customer, regardless of whether they use our current non-medical device solutions or our medical device software.

“Quality isn’t about paperwork or checking boxes. It’s about understanding the bigger picture and helping build solutions that healthcare professionals can rely on.”

More than certification

One of the most significant milestones during Päivi’s time at Medbase has been the CE-marking of Medbase CDS, Medbase’s medical device. Although certification is an important achievement that required a lot of work from the whole organisation, she sees it as part of a much bigger picture – maintaining product quality and regulatory compliance is an ongoing commitment.

The conformity assessment also reminded her that experience never replaces curiosity.

– Working closely with our notified body during the CE-marking gave me valuable new perspectives. Even after years in quality management and regulatory affairs, I came away having learned something new.

Supporting safe clinical decision-making

For our customers and end users, the healthcare professionals, much of the quality and regulatory work is invisible.  That is exactly how Päivi believes it should be.

– When quality and compliance are built into the foundation, healthcare professionals can focus on what matters most – caring for patients. Behind the scenes, the work continues. Quality is never a finished project.
