Medbase is expanding in Europe – Welcoming Pavel Šilhan

30.9.2025

We are delighted to welcome Pavel Šilhan as our new Sales Manager for the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Pavel brings extensive experience in healthcare digitalisation and ICT, having led major digital transformation projects for hospitals, regional authorities and national health systems – always bridging the needs of clinicians, IT experts and decision-makers.

His expertise covers hospital information systems, interoperability, eHealth and telemedicine, and he combines technical know-how with practical, on-the-ground solutions that meet real clinical and operational needs. At Medbase, he will support healthcare professionals, hospitals and healthcare IT providers in the region with proven solutions to deliver safer and more effective drug therapy.

For Pavel, joining Medbase represents an opportunity to contribute to a company that combines scientific excellence and technical innovation:

“I perceive Medbase as a leader in Europe in drug safety solutions. What excites me is the clear benefit for both healthcare professionals and patients. The company’s strength lies in its team of top professional, and its flexibility to deliver world-class solutions.”

Opening the local conversation on drug safety

Pavel will work closely with hospitals, clinics, pharmacies and software providers to enable healthcare professionals with seamless access to drug therapy related clinical decision support at the point of care. He will align Medbase’s approach with national eHealth strategies and local digitalisation efforts and embed Medbase’s drug information into everyday workflows by building collaborations across the healthcare ecosystem.

“My role is to open up the topic of drug safety more broadly and present the many benefits of Medbase solutions to healthcare professionals. My first priorities are increasing the visibility of medication safety as a critical part of patient treatment in the Czech and Slovak markets and explaining the value so that safer prescribing and treatment becomes the standard of care.”

Leveraging existing digital infrastructure – region ready for change

Both the Czech Republic and Slovakia are well positioned for Medbase’s solutions. Pavel foresees a fast route to impact by building on existing infrastructure.

“Mature ePrescription systems and digital national drug repositories in both countries provide a comprehensive prescription in one place, providing a strong foundation for practical safety solutions and clinical decision support that help prevent medication errors supporting  safer prescribing effectively.”

With core infrastructure already in place, adoption becomes easier and the potential benefits for patient safety are accelerated. The biggest opportunity lies in using that available infrastructure to deliver decision support and evidence-based drug information that integrates with local systems and follows interoperability standards such as SNOMED and HL7. Medbase’s flexibility for localisation, from local languages to drug registries, positions us well to support clinicians, pharmacists and healthcare organisations locally.

Pavel is realistic about the region’s challenges, noting demographic pressures that reduce healthcare availability and increase clinicians’ workload. Added to that is the sheer volume and complexity of drug information – interactions, dosing variations, contraindications and pharmacogenetic considerations – which is increasingly difficult for clinicians to track and apply without digital support during routine care. In that context, digital solutions that improve both safety and efficiency are not just nice to have – they are essential.

“What drew me to Medbase is the company’s genuine focus on the people who use its solutions. There’s a clear commitment to understand local needs, work closely with clinicians and partners, and find practical ways to support clinical workflows while improving patient safety.”

Building partnerships for safer care

What motivates Pavel is the mix of digital health innovation and people. As he says:

“This sector is constantly evolving, which means you need to bring new solutions into play. Sales is also about meeting people and building networks – something I really value.”

Outside work he plays badminton, enjoys downhill skiing, follows many sports as a fan, and enjoys long walks with his dog, Benny. These activities help him recharge.

With Pavel on board, Medbase continues to strengthen its international presence and commitment to safer drug therapy across Europe. We are excited to welcome him to the team. His strategic health-ICT experience, practical project know-how, and strong passion for advancing patient safety, will be valuable as we expand in Europe.

If you’re in the Czech Republic or Slovakia and want to talk about drug safety, interoperability or local integrations, please contact Pavel. Or if you will be attending the Dolmed.tech conference in Poland (1–3 Oct), feel free to meet him in person. To arrange a meeting, email pavel.silhan@medbase.fi

Please join us as we give a warm welcome to Pavel Šilhan.

Our summer intern Artturi Aalto-Setälä – a versatile contributor across teams

Our summer intern Artturi Aalto-Setälä – a versatile contributor across teams

13.8.2025

This summer, Medbase welcomed Artturi Aalto-Setälä, a biomedical engineering and health technology student at the University of Turku. From day one he brought energy, fresh ideas, and a genuine curiosity to understand how different parts of our business work together.

“Working on-site in a friendly office helped me see how my studies fit into the company’s day-to-day – and this summer has been a crash course in hands-on learning.”

Artturi Aalto-Setälä

Artturi chose Medbase because he wanted to apply his studies to real health-tech challenges. With family in pharma, the motivation has long been there. During his studies he had come across Medbase – and knew we sponsor his student association – so the decision to apply came naturally.

Hands-on highlights

Rather than settling into a single lane, Artturi moved between risk management, marketing, and product development. What left the strongest impression wasn’t any one task, but the perspective he gained: how patient safety sits at the centre of what we do, how quality management shapes everyday choices, how words on a website can improve visibility and findability, and how a well-designed API can turn clinical data into something genuinely useful.

“The variety surprised me,” he reflects. “One week I’m analysing software-development risks and thinking about regulations and the quality management system (QMS); the next I’m diving into SEO and web content, or testing endpoints, writing technical documentation, and peeking into the backend to ensure the documents mirror how the system really works. It pushed me to learn quickly and to ask good questions.”

Postman – an API testing and collaboration tool – became Artturi’s favourite because it let him quickly test and explore how APIs behave. He could build and send requests, inspect responses, organise tests into logical collections, troubleshoot issues, and understand systems faster, which significantly sped up his work. Along the way supportive colleagues, quick turnarounds, and positive feedback from everyone he worked with built his confidence and drive.

Artturi’s advice to next summer’s interns is simple: “Ask boldly and use every tool available – that accelerates learning more than anything.

What’s next

“I’m grateful for everything I learned and for seeing how a real company builds and safeguards quality. I hope to continue at Medbase or in similar roles alongside my studies, deepen this summer’s skills, and keep building my network. My goal is to do well in my studies, but also to enjoy student life and time with friends. And one final lesson: there’s no such thing as a free lunch – unless your lunch voucher is in the right pocket.

By the end of his internship, Artturi had sharpened his toolkit, and more importantly, gained a wide-angle view of how teams collaborate to move Medbase forward. He made life easier for the people around him and brought a thoughtful, curious presence to every room. We are grateful for his work and cannot wait to see where his talents take him next.

At Medbase, we believe that true expertise grows through teamwork and mutual support. Thank you, Artturi, for demonstrating this spirit all summer long.

The Central Eastern European healthcare sector is undergoing rapid digital transformation, driven by policy reforms, EU funding, and a growing need for more integrated, evidence-based decision support. As these changes accelerate, there is increasing demand for solutions that support rational pharmacotherapy, reduce adverse drug events, and enable personalised care pathways.

“The CEE region is entering a phase where digital health is no longer a future ambition, but a present-day necessity,” Sławomir explains. “There’s a real opportunity to create meaningful impact by combining clinical expertise with smart, scalable digital solutions.”

Medbase strengthens its presence in the DACH region – welcome, Stefan Bodensteiner

28.3.2025

We are pleased to welcome Stefan Bodensteiner to Medbase as our new Sales Manager for Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Stefan joins us on April 1st, bringing with him an impressive career in sales, deep market knowledge and a strong professional network. His extensive experience in healthcare IT and understanding of the unique challenges in the region will be instrumental in driving Medbase’s growth.

To introduce Stefan, we asked him a few questions about his background, his decision to join Medbase and his vision for the future.

Rooted in relationships, focused on solutions

Stefan’s professional journey began in the German Armed Forces, where he served as an officer in the military police. One of the highlights of his military career was leading a personal protection mission for Prince Andrew during a naval maneuver in the Baltic Sea.

After a successful career in the military, he transitioned to the business world in 1997, taking on sales roles in hardware, software and services. Over time, he found his focus in healthcare IT, where he has worked closely with doctors, pharmacists and medical staff across the DACH region.

His ability to build trusted relationships, identify customer pain points and offer solutions that enhance clinical decision-making has made him a key player in supporting the region’s digital healthcare transformation.

Outside of work, Stefan is married and has a grown-up son. He enjoys staying active, gardening and unwinding with Scandinavian crime novels–especially those by Jussi Adler-Olsen.

Why Medbase?

When asked why he chose to join Medbase, Stefan highlights the company’s European foundation and its commitment to delivering globally validated science in a local context.

He values Medbase’s agility and customer-first mindset, which allow the team to respond quickly to evolving needs and deliver practical, tailored solutions for healthcare organisations.

“What drew me to Medbase is the clear focus on putting the customer at the center of everything. There’s a real drive to understand local needs and work together to find the best ways to support clinical work and improve patient safety.”

Please join us in giving a warm welcome to Stefan Bodensteiner and wishing him great success in his new role!

“Our product development is foresighted”

“Our product development is foresighted”

Markus Jansén, M.Sc. (Tech.), started in his new job as the manager of product development at Medbase in April. Jansén is driven by the meaningfulness of his work – the fact that the products provided by Medbase contribute to the efficient and safe drug treatment for patients.

Markus Jansén has been interested in health technology for a long time. Already during his studies for a Master’s degree in Information Technology, Jansén worked in companies in the field. Over the years, he has gained solid experience in, for example, the development of patient information systems and medical devices, quality registers and software development processes.

Prior to his appointment as Chief Product Officer (CPO) at Medbase, Jansén worked as the software development manager at a company in the field, leading a team of over 100 professionals.

“During my career, I’ve gained experience in engineering as well as quality and product management. I look forward to being able to create and develop practices that will contribute to the future success of Medbase.”

In his role as CPO, Jansén is responsible for software products and their development. A vital aspect in the development of products such as Medbase API and Medbase Portal, both of which are based on Medbase Knowledgebase, is foresightedness. The direction must be clear throughout the phased process and the strict quality requirements must be met at all stages.

“In agile development, it is essential to listen to the end-user, that is, the healthcare professionals using our products. Nobody welcomes a clinical application designed and made by engineers alone.”

Clinical requirements as the starting point

The databases provided by Medbase offer evidence-based and referenced information that is produced by experts in clinical pharmacology. For Jansén, user experience is a particularly important aspect. Reliable information must be presented in a clear, user-friendly and easily comprehensible form.

“In the development work, we always start from the requirements of the healthcare professionals using our products, such as physicians and pharmacists. They also play a key role in usability testing”, Jansén explains.

The newly appointed CPO mentions localisation as another strength of the Medbase products. Supported by local drug registers, EHR vendors and localisation teams, the databases are currently available in 11 languages in 20 countries across Europe.

“It is great to be able to extend Finnish expertise to other parts of Europe. We provide healthcare professionals with support for drug treatment decisions, which will have a positive impact on patient safety and people’s lives”, Jansén sums up.

Jansén has enjoyed his first months at Medbase. Family life with three children and leisure activities such as biking are important sources of energy for Jansén. “Now, I also cycle to work as the commuting distance dropped from 59 to 9 kilometres”, Jansén laughs.
